NASAA Statement on U.S. Senate Vote to Uphold State AI Regulations

WASHINGTON, D.C. (July 1, 2025) — The following is a statement from Leslie Van Buskirk, President of the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and Wisconsin Securities Administrator, on the U.S. Senate’s vote to remove a provision from the 2025 budget reconciliation bill that would impose a moratorium on enforcing state-level artificial intelligence (AI) laws or regulations:

“Today, the U.S. Senate voted 99-1 to remove a provision from the Senate version of the budget reconciliation bill that effectively would prohibit the enforcement of most state laws and regulations governing uses of artificial intelligence. NASAA applauds the Senate for sending a clear message that the states should not be forced to make an impossible choice between enforcing laws that foster innovation and fight fraud and accepting federal funding to expand broadband access.”
