WASHINGTON, D.C. – (June 13, 2025) – In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) reminds financial professionals and the public that they play an important role in helping older investors identify and avoid financial scams. As financial scams targeting older adults continue to rise, NASAA underscores the critical role of community vigilance and education.
“Every day, NASAA members work on the front lines of older investor protection. They have developed tools for communities to use to raise awareness of elder financial abuse and how to prevent it,” said NASAA President Leslie Van Buskirk. “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day provides NASAA’s members with the opportunity to share these resources with the communities they serve. Knowledge and vigilance are our best defenses against scammers.”
To help engage older investors and their family and friends, NASAA’s members bring a multi-pronged approach of education, awareness, and community support, according to Van Buskirk.
Tips include:
- Share a flyer, “Helping Investors Protect Their Assets“, which explains the red flags of pig butchering, affinity fraud, and romance scams, and how to report them. Designed by the NASAA Investor Education Senior Outreach Project Group, the flyer is intended for printing and distribution.
- Visit NASAA’s Fraud Center to learn about top investor threats, identify the warning signs of fraud, and take our investment fraud awareness quiz.
- Empower communities by inviting state and provincial securities regulators to present investor education sessions. Find out who your regulator is and how to contact them using our online directory.
“Community involvement is crucial in the fight against elder financial abuse. By working together, we can create a safer environment for all investors,” said President Van Buskirk.
