WASHINGTON (April 18, 2016)—In announcing its ongoing support of Financial Literacy Month (April 1-30), a nationwide initiative to raise public awareness about the importance of financial literacy, the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) today reminded investors of all ages of the investor education resources available from state securities regulators.

“State securities regulators can help sharpen your financial literacy skills,” said Judith Shaw, NASAA President and Maine Securities Administrator. “An important aspect of becoming financially literate is not only learning how to invest wisely, but also how to avoid investment fraud.”

In recognition of April as Financial Literacy Month in the United States, state securities agencies are visiting a wide range of audiences from schools to senior centers, military bases to community centers in an effort to educate Americans of all ages about safe investing. NASAA members also bring these investor education resources directly to investors throughout the year through events, workshops and seminars.

“State securities regulators recognize the importance of protecting investors through education and are dedicated to improving the financial literacy of our constituents of all ages,” Shaw said.

NASAA’s website also provides general investor education materials, as well as those developed for specific audiences, including youth and educators, adults and families, women, military personnel, and seniors. NASAA also provides additional resources for seniors on its new Serve Our Seniors website at serveourseniors.org.

Shaw encouraged investors to contact their state securities regulator to learn more about the wide range of free investor education resources they provide. Contact information for all state securities regulators is available on the NASAA website at nasaa.org.

“NASAA members provide well trained, unbiased, noncommercial experts in financial services, products, and fraud prevention who live and work in the communities they serve,” Shaw said. “As such, state securities regulators continue to serve as an extremely effective resource in the pursuit of financial literacy.”
