NASAA Joins National Financial Capability Month Campaign

WASHINGTON (April 5, 2018)- The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) announced its support of Financial Capability Month, a nationwide investor awareness initiative that invites people to improve their understanding of financial principles and best practices.

“A key component of improving your financial capability is having an understanding of basic financial principles and practices. Being financially literate helps keep savings and investments safe from financial predators,” said Joseph P. Borg, NASAA President and Alabama Securities Commission Director.

“During National Financial Capability Month, and throughout the year, we invite investors to use the variety of investor education resources available from NASAA members,” Borg said.

Most state securities regulators have established investor education departments or divisions within their agencies. The result is an effective network of dedicated professionals delivering unbiased, relevant, and free investor education programming at the grassroots level.

Borg encouraged investors to contact their state securities regulators before making an investment to determine if the investment and the person selling or recommending it are properly registered with the appropriate authorities. “The time to ask questions is before you part with your hard-earned money. And you have to know the right questions to ask. That’s where we can help.”

Borg said NASAA members have developed a wide array of specialized community outreach programs to educate investors in their jurisdictions. For an overview of current programs or to request that a program be delivered to your group or workplace visit the NASAA Outreach Programs and Speakers Bureau on the NASAA website here.

NASAA is the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection. Its membership consists of the securities administrators in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the provinces and territories of Canada, and Mexico.
