State Securities Regulators Join America Saves Week to Build Awareness of Safe Financial Behavior

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 27, 2017) — Members of the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) are participating in America Saves Week February 27-March 4, a national campaign to encourage people to save and invest for their financial future.

“As families across America discuss their saving and investing goals, they can turn to the resources provided by state securities regulators to learn about investing wisely in order to meet their financial goals,” said Mike Rothman, NASAA president and Minnesota Commissioner of Commerce. “Information and awareness are critical in the fight against losing hard-earned money to investment fraud.”

To help investors discuss their finances, NASAA is making available a series of “Conversation Starters,” developed by its Investor Education section and available on the NASAA website, here.

Each Conversation Starter includes questions designed to help families’ kick-start an ongoing dialogue about budgeting, saving, investing and avoiding investment frauds. “Each Conversation Starter also offers information pointing to additional resources from state securities regulators to help investors take the next step toward more confidently managing their finances,” Rothman said.

“Included in each Conversation Starter is information pointing to additional resources from state securities regulators so that you can take the next step toward more confidently managing your finances,” Rothman said.

Rothman said state securities regulators can provide detailed information about an investment product, broker or investment adviser. Contact information for all state securities regulators is available on the NASAA website under “Contact Your Regulator.

NASAA’s website also provides investor alerts and additional investor education resources to help investors detect warning signs of investment fraud. NASAA also has created a website designed specifically for issues of interest to senior investors, their caregivers, policymakers and financial services providers. The Serve Our Seniors website is available at www.serveourseniors.org.

America Saves Week is a national public awareness effort co-sponsored by America Saves, a campaign managed by the Consumer Federation of America, and the American Savings Education Council, of which NASAA is a partner.
