Conference to Feature Forum Examining Investor Protection Through Effective Enforcement and Regulation
WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 11, 2007) —The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) will hold its 2007 Public Policy Conference on May 8 in Washington, D.C. to focus attention on investor protection issues of key concern to both state securities regulators and the securities industry, NASAA President and Alabama Securities Commission Director Joseph P. Borg said today.
The conference, which carries the theme “Because Every Investor Deserves Protection,” will be held at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel, 1227 Connecticut Avenue, N.W. in Washington, D.C.
Following welcoming remarks by Conference Chair and Delaware Securities Commissioner James B. Ropp and District of Columbia Deputy Mayor Neal Albert, the program will begin with an address by Harvey J. Goldschmid, the Dwight Professor of Law at Columbia University and a former commissioner of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Professor Goldschmid, who stepped down from the SEC in July 2005 after serving for three years as Commissioner, is of senior counsel at Weil, Gotshal & Manges. He was Special Senior Advisor to SEC Chairman Arthur Levitt in 2000. From 1998-99, while on leave from Columbia University, Professor Goldschmid served as General Counsel of the SEC.
In another important component of the conference, NASAA will sponsor a Public Policy Forum entitled “Investor Protection Through Effective Enforcement and Regulation.” The Forum will bring together a panel of leading investor protection advocates to discuss how to balance the ongoing need for strong and effective regulation while maintaining the competitiveness of our nation’s capital markets. The panel, to be moderated by Arizona Securities Director Matthew J. Neubert, will feature, among others: Edmund Mierzwinski, Consumer Program Director, U.S. Public Interest Research Group; Damon Silvers, General Counsel, AFL-CIO; Bryan Lantagne, Director of the Massachusetts Securities Division; Ira Hammerman, Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association(SIFMA); and Jake Zamansky, principal, Zamansky & Associates.
The conference also includes a luncheon with invited keynote speaker Congressman Paul E. Kanjorski (D-PA). Rep. Kanjorski was first elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Pennsylvania’s 11th Congressional District in 1984. In the 110th Congress, Congressman Kanjorski is the Chairman of the House Financial Services Subcommittee on Capital Markets, Insurance and Government Sponsored Enterprises, which has jurisdiction over securities, exchanges, and most insurance matters, except for health insurance. As Chairman of the Capital Markets Subcommittee, Congressman Kanjorski has made investor protection a top priority.
