Borg: ‘Educating investors of all ages empowers them to make sound financial choices”

WASHINGTON (April 18, 2007) — The following is a statement from North American Securities Administrators Association President and Director of the Alabama Securities Commission Joseph P. Borg on the passage of Senate Resolution 126 and House Resolution 273, supporting the goals and ideals of Financial Literacy Month. NASAA is the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection. NASAA’s membership consists of securities administrators in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, and Mexico.

“NASAA applauds the Senate for passing S. Res. 126 and the House of Representatives for approving H. Res. 273, which support the goals and ideals of Financial Literacy Month. We appreciate the efforts of Sen. Daniel Akaka (D-HI) and 20 bipartisan Senate cosponsors, as well as Reps. Rubén Hinojosa (D-TX), Judy Biggert (R-IL), and 119 bipartisan House cosponsors, for sponsoring these important investor education resolutions and bringing much needed attention to the issue of financial literacy.

“NASAA members are on the frontlines of financial literacy and investor protection because educating investors of all ages empowers them to make sound financial choices. Throughout the year NASAA members bring the tools investors need directly to them, whether by empowering seniors to avoid investment fraud;  teaching youth the value of sound investing principles through interactive games and essay contests; or providing personal finance and fraud prevention education at military bases.

“NASAA members have a legacy of protecting investors through education and are dedicated to improving financial literacy for our all of our constituents. We appreciate the efforts of Congress to focus attention on improving financial literacy because we share a strong belief that financial education has a direct impact on the economic health of our families and communities throughout North America.”
