WASHINGTON, DC (May 1, 2017)—State and provincial securities regulators will convene in Washington, DC next month to discuss the outlook for securities regulation and investor protection under the new political landscape when the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) hosts its annual Public Policy Conference. The conference is scheduled for May 9 at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill, 400 New Jersey Avenue, NW, Washington, DC.

“This year’s conference will help us stay on the forefront of securities regulation, capital formation, investor protection and key public policy for state and provincial regulators as we chart a course for the future amid a sea of change,” said Mike Rothman, NASAA President and Minnesota Commissioner of Commerce.

Under the direction of conference chair Claire McHenry, Deputy Director of the Nebraska Bureau of Securities, this year’s conference features a series of discussions and speakers. Featured speakers include Mark Hamrick, Washington Bureau Chief and Senior Economic Analyst, Bankrate, and President of the Society of American Business Editors and Writers; and Rick Fleming, Investor Advocate at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The first panel of experts will discuss trends regarding the declining number of publicly listed companies and the potential impact this trend will have on retail investors in the future. Moderated by Anya Coverman, NASAA’s Deputy Director of Policy and Associate General Counsel, the discussion features: Mary Condon, Associate Dean, Osgoode Hall Law School and former Vice Chair and Commissioner of the Ontario Securities Commission; William Bratton, Nicholas F. Gallicchio Professor of Law and Co-Director, Institute for Law & Economics, University of Pennsylvania Law School; Dan James Suzuki, CFA, Senior U.S. Equity Strategist, Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Research; and Daniel Zinn , General Counsel, OTC Markets Group Inc.

During the second discussion, moderated by Katherine Milgram, New York Investor Protection Bureau Chief, a New York Investor Protection Bureau, participants will explore the outlook for state and federal securities regulation under the new administration. The panel will feature Joseph Borg, NASAA President.-elect and Director of the Alabama Securities Commission; Michael Barr, Roy F. and Jean Humphrey Proffitt Professor of Law, University of Michigan Law School; and David Lipton, Professor of Law and Director of the Securities Regulation Program, The Catholic University of America.

The conference’s third discussion takes the audience “under the dome” when NASAA Director of Policy Michael Canning moderates a panel of senior staff members from relevant House and Senate committees with jurisdiction over financial services and securities matters in a discussion of financial regulation and the 115th Congress.

The conference also features a luncheon with a keynote speaker. On-site registration begins at 11 a.m. and the keynote luncheon follows at 12 p.m. The general session begins at 1:30 p.m. and is scheduled to conclude at 6 p.m., followed by a reception.
