Members to Conduct Training Sessions to Help Financial Services Industry Detect and Report Senior Financial Exploitation

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 25, 2017) — The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) today announced its second Senior$afe Training Week, during which a number of its members will provide training sessions to help financial services employees, including stockbrokers and investment advisers, as well as bank and credit union tellers learn how to identify and report suspected cases of senior financial exploitation.

Mike Rothman, NASAA President and Minnesota Commissioner of Commerce said Senior$afe Training Week will be held June 11-17 in recognition by NASAA and its members of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15) to focus attention on the growing need to raise awareness among financial services employees of the red flags of senior financial exploitation.

“NASAA’s Senior$afe training program is an essential resource for investment services providers who are uniquely positioned to help protect seniors and identify financial abuse,” Rothman said. “Because of their long-standing relationships of trust with older clients, they are able to serve as a first line of defense to spot financial crimes and alert officials.”

Securities regulators are using NASAA’s version of Senior$afe, a training program initially launched in Maine in 2014. NASAA collaborated with the Maine Council for Elder Abuse Prevention to rework the program to reach a broad cross-section of the financial services industry, including broker-dealers, investment advisers, banks and credit unions.

Rothman said Senior$afe trainings will be held in Alabama, Alaska, Connecticut, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee. A calendar of Senior$afe training sessions is available on NASAA’s Serve Our Seniors website (serveourseniors.org). The calendar will be updated as additional training locations and dates are announced.

During its first Senior$afe Training Week in October 2016, NASAA members conducted trainings across the country to more than 700 investment services professionals, ranging from individual stockbrokers and investment advisers to compliance executives.

NASAA is the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection. Its membership consists of the securities administrators in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the provinces and territories of Canada, and Mexico.
