New Workplace Education Training Program to Help Workers Toward Retirement Security

WASHINGTON, D.C. (December 20, 2016) — With retirement security a top worry of many working adults, the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) today announced the launch of a new initiative to deliver investor education at workplaces throughout North America to help workers learn how to plan for and reach their retirement goals.

The “Start Today and Retire Tomorrow” (STaRT) initiative is designed to be delivered through workplace seminars to help working adults ages 18-to-55 who may not fully utilize—or be aware of—existing resources and strategies available to help attain retirement security.

“This is a great workplace training program offered by securities regulators in response to the need to help with unbiased investor education materials that effectively focus on working adults as they plan for retirement,” said Mike Rothman, NASAA President and Minnesota Commissioner of Commerce.

Research from the Employee Benefit Research Institute (EBRI) shows that many mid- and late-Baby Boomers and Generation X members lack adequate retirement income to support a financially secure retirement. According to EBRI research, the aggregate national retirement savings deficit is about $4.13 trillion for all U.S. households between age 25 and 64.

“A troubling sober reality for many in the workforce is falling short when it comes to investing for an adequate income in retirement,” Rothman said. “Our advice to working adults is don’t wait until it is too late. Start preparing today for your retirement security tomorrow.”

The workplace outreach program, available in versions for both U.S. and Canadian audiences, was developed by the Life Stages Project Group of NASAA’s Investor Education Section. The program is intended to be delivered by NASAA members, who will cover all phases of retirement planning for various life stages.

Rothman said representatives of NASAA members are available to speak to companies large and small throughout North America. To arrange a presentation, contact your local state or provincial securities regulator. Contact information for all NASAA members is available on the NASAA website here.
