Nationwide Training Sessions Conducted by State Securities Regulators Aimed at Helping Investment Services Professionals Identify and Report Senior Financial Exploitation

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 13, 2016) — The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) today announced the successful completion of the first Senior$afe Training Week, which provided training on how to identify and report suspected cases of senior financial exploitation. The trainings were conducted across the country to more than 700 investment services professionals, ranging from individual stockbrokers and investment advisers to compliance executives.

Mike Rothman, NASAA President and Minnesota Commissioner of Commerce said NASAA members used Senior$afe Training Week (October 2-8) to promote greater awareness among financial services employees about the red flags of senior financial exploitation.

“Combating financial exploitation of investors, especially older Americans, is a top priority for state securities regulators,” said Rothman. “Investment services providers are uniquely positioned to help protect seniors and identify financial abuse on the front lines. We believe the Senior$afe training program is an essential resource for these industry professionals. We will continue to conduct training programs in the months ahead to reach many more investment professionals.”

Securities regulators are using NASAA’s version of Senior$afe, a training program launched initially in Maine in 2014. NASAA collaborated with the Maine Council for Elder Abuse Prevention to rework the program to reach a broad cross-section of the financial services industry, including broker-dealers, investment advisers, banks and credit unions.

Rothman said Senior$afe trainings have been held in Alabama, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Additional trainings are being planned in Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Montana, and Vermont.

A calendar of Senior$afe training sessions is available on NASAA’s Serve Our Seniors website (serveourseniors.org). This calendar will be updated as additional training dates are announced.

NASAA is the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection. Its membership consists of the securities administrators in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the provinces and territories of Canada, and Mexico.
