WASHINGTON (January 24, 2013) – The following is a statement from A. Heath Abshure, President of the North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) and Arkansas Securities Commissioner, on the nomination today by President Obama of Mary Jo White to lead the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission:

“The nomination of a former prosecutor with the accomplished track record of Mary Jo White to lead the SEC signals that the Obama Administration expects the agency to hold Wall Street closely accountable for financial misdeeds and to fully implement the investor protection reforms of the Dodd-Frank Act. White’s successful enforcement background should send a strong message to those who violate our nation’s securities laws that they will be stopped and punished.

“State securities regulators across the country look forward to continued cooperation with our federal counterparts as we work to carry our shared mission to protect investors and foster responsible capital formation.”

NASAA, the oldest international organization devoted to investor protection. NASAA’s membership consists of the securities administrators in the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the provinces and territories of Canada, and Mexico.
